Meru county government has purchased equipment for construction of a banana wine processing plant valued at Sh. 1.8 million.

The project under the Banana Cooperative will open its brewery in Ntharene market area of Abogeta East Ward in Imenti South Sub County.

Speaking at the handover ceremony of the brewery equipment Meru governor Peter Munya said the objective of starting the facility is to protect the banana producers from unscrupulous businessmen who exploit the farmers financially by purchasing the crop at very low prices.

He added that through the Banana Cooperatives Society the county government will nurture the culture of savings to improve the lives of farmers.

"This plant will not only assist with value addition of bananas, but also give the farmers the bargaining power to seek new markets", he said.

Among other value addition strategies in place include a chain production consisting of banana flour mill whose flour is used as a flavor, banana crisps packaging and banana juice production.

The governor added that Meru agricultural produce is unique and the best quality a feature known the world over with coffee, potatoes, tea, meat, miraa, bananas and others.

Munya also called for responsible consumption of banana beer and wine where he guaranteed support from the county government in branding and marketing the products.

Other by products of the raw material from the plant will be used to manufacture fertilizer that will be sold to farmers.
The farmers have also received a license from the Kenya Bureau of Standards to commence brewing banana beer.
