County Government moves in to combat army-worm in Meru

The national and County Governments are collaborating to fight the fall army worm menace in the county
County Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries chief officer Kinge Manene said the pests have already invaded cereal crops in Imenti North, Imenti Central, Imenti South and Tigania West.Manene said that the County has developed methods to combat the pest to ensure farmers are food secure.
"We are grateful for the interventions by the national government program to supply pesticides, supplementing what county is doing towards controlling armyworms. They have already attacked cereal crops in Imenti North, Imenti Central, Imenti South and Tigania West although not in large extent. We will push to ensure crops are safe and farmers do not incur any loss," Manene said.
Representatives from the CS William Bett office led by departments' Assistant Director Teresia Karanja Launched Control of the pest by delivering a 1,500 Liters consignment of the pesticides in Meru headquarters
"This is a new trans-boundary pest that was reported in March this year and it affects maize, a staple food crop in Kenya. We have brought a 1,500 litres consignment of pesticides to spray. We have Western and Central Kenya team which are enhancing what counties are doing to rescue farmers," she said
