Meru Governor H.E. Hon. Rev. Mutuma MEthingia Officially Launches The Meru County Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Act, 2025
Meru Governor H.E. Hon. Rev. Mutuma M’Ethingia has officially launched the Meru County Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Act of 2025, marking a significant milestone in the county’s economic and social development agenda. Speaking during the launch, the Governor urged residents to take proactive steps toward economic empowerment, building resilience, and inclusive growth as they work to create sustainable wealth for the community.
"Meru is the cradle of the cooperative movement," the Governor stated, proudly noting that the county is home to over 464 duly registered and audited cooperative societies, an indication of Meru’s unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and grassroots economic empowerment.
In a strong condemnation of criminal activities targeting farmers, Governor Mutuma denounced the actions of cartels involved in coffee theft and related violence, including the recent spate of attacks on night watchmen. "We will not stand by while the sweat of our people is stolen," he declared. "The same energy we have committed to combating livestock theft in the Northern Grazing Zone will be applied to safeguarding our farmers and their produce."
The Governor further underscored the county government’s collaboration with the Economic Advisor to the President Hon. Moses Kuria in mobilizing investors and aggregators across various agricultural value chains. These efforts aim to boost value addition, expand market access, and reduce post harvest losses.
With the enactment of the amended law, the Governor emphasized the urgent need to protect the gains of local labor and ensure fair compensation for all contributors within the cooperative ecosystem.
In his closing remarks, Governor M’Ethingia extended heartfelt appreciation to the Honorable Members of the Meru County Assembly for their swift and decisive action in passing the amendment. It is a legislative victory that brings to fruition a 14-year journey.
