MERU COUNTY TO ISSUE LIQOUR LICENCES
Meru County government through its new Alcoholic Drinks Control Board will issue licenses for manufacturing, production and sale of alcoholic drinks.H.E. Governor Peter Munya inaugurated the new board as stipulated in the Meru County Alcoholic Drinks Control Act 2014 which came into law after the High Court threw out a case filed by Meru Bar, Wines and Spirits Owners Self Help Group challenging the legality of the act.No person or company will be allowed to manufacture, sell or deal with import or export beers, wines and spirits in Meru unless licensed by the new Alcoholic Drinks Control Board. The law gives the board extensive Powers to regulate manufacture and sale of alcohol in Meru County.The sub-county committees will have power to vet any person applying for a manufacture, wholesale or retail license. The new law also prohibits the sale of alcohol in plastic containers."I urge all business people operating without licenses to move with speed and comply with the new law. We will also move with speed to conduct an audit on all bars and liquor sale outlets operating without licenses and those dealing in sale of illegal liquor," said the board chairlady Mrs. Jane Kithela Ikirima.
