40 Cervical Cancer Screening Kits To Be Installed In Meru Hospitals
Meru County Government has purchased forty specialized cervical cancer testing kits to assist women to know their status.
The machines will relief agony of patients in seeking medical attention far from Meru.
According to Governor Peter Munya, his administration has established a cancer registry at the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in collaboration with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) take data, analyze and do research in a bid to counter the high prevalence of cancer cases in the County. "We were able to buy 40 specialized testing kits for cervical cancer screening .The kits are a new technology from Israel made to assist women to know their status," he said Munya spoke at Ntakira Methodist church in Meru town during the burial of Daudi Mwiraria where he also asked the national to establish a cancer center. Mwiraria was a Finance minister in former President Mwai Kibaki’s regime and died at Karen Hospital in Nairobi on Thursday 13th April after a long battle with cancer. "We have established chemotherapy at MTRH, two oncologists come over in two weeks to cater for patients who cannot afford to go too far," he said.
Munya said cancer is becoming a major threat to the nation but lauded the national government’s initiatives and interventions on the health sector in the country. He added that his administration is catering to about 200 cancer patients as a result of a county-wide cancer screening exercise.
"We have screened over 78, 000 people in the county, 2000 shown signs of the disease and were taken for specialized investigations among them, 200 were found with different stages of cancer and are undergoing treatment right now," he said.
The Cancer screening program was spearheaded in all the 45 Wards in Meru County, with those found with symptoms are referred to Meru Teaching and Referral for further analysis and medication.
