GOVERNOR KIRAITU BACKS INCREASED POTATO PRODUCTION
Governor Kiraitu has promised to collaborate with Marimba Farm Management to secure a 100-acre piece of land for research and seed multiplication of the Processing Potato Varieties, which will boost potato production in Meru.
The Governor who was in a recent official travel to Canada, said that the knowledge he learnt in both production and processing of potato, will be shared to Meru farmers through agricultural field extension.
"Meru people needs not only Knowledge on the best crop varieties, but also sensitization on the best agronomies, crop rotation, as well as on the right soils" Said the Governor
The Governor emphasized on his ambition to see a major Potato Processing Factory in Meru as well as ensuring every Potato Cooperative Society has a storage facility. He also warned against tea leaves theft and unlawful processing of the tea which he said affect the quality of Meru Processed Tea.
His sentiments were echoed by the CS Agriculture, Mr. Mwangi Kiunjuri, who pronounced a stern action will be taken against the culprits. Already the National Government through the Ministry of Agriculture has promised to support Kiraitu’s ambitious ideas to give solutions to Food Security not only in Meru but also Country wide. He said his Ministry is committed to helping Meru County mechanize agricultural activities and also provide potato storage facilities as well as drip kits
Mr. Kiunjuri added that Meru is at the Centre of food security as it is known for putting more effort on potato production. This comes amid the formation of one of the best performing Meru Potato Cooperative Union.
"For the first time its only Meru County which has the most organized societies." Said Mr. Kiunjuri The CS pronounced that the "Mituuruchr(039)chr(039) packaging of potato will soon be a history as the new Potato Regulations Act will be gazetted in two weeks’ time. He said Potato will be sold in Kilograms.
The two were speaking during the Potato Farmers Field Day held at Marimba Farm, Imenti South, Sub-county whose theme was "Promoting new potato varieties and technologies for food and nutrition security and improved outcomes."
They were accompanied by both CEC Agriculture and CEC Trade, Prof. Kiugu Karwitha and Mr.Maingi Mugambi respectively
