FEEDER ROADS TO BE UPGRADED USING COBBLESTONE TECHNOLOGY

The County Government is spearheading a pilot project for the upgrading of feeder roads in the County, to Roman Technology using cobblestone. The pilot project is currently underway along Simba wells, Makutano in Municipality Ward, North Imenti Sub-County.

The Project is in line with Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s Manifesto Promise to improve roads in all wards across the County. The Governor is committed to providing Meru residents with state of the art road infrastructure for the County to achieve full economic potential in sectors such as agriculture, trade, and transport among others.

The technology is based on the use of locally available materials such as cobblestone and the utilization of local labour. Youth from the respective localities are selected and taken through training on the use of Roman Technology by trainers contracted from Kenya Institute of Building and Highways Technology.

After training and certification, the youth are then taken to site for practical experience, after which they are deployed for involvement into the project. They are given daily remunerations accordingly, for the tasks performed.

This program by the County Government is also one of the many ingenious strategies that have been put in place, in order to address unemployment among the youth, as well as address skill gap in the job market. "The project will be replicated to feeder roads in other wards across the County," said the Engineer in charge, County Roads and Transport Department.
