MERU COUNTY AMONG TOP 15 AQUACULTURE PRODUCING COUNTIES
Meru County has been chosen among Kirinyaga, and Nyeri Counties in eastern region to pilot the ‘Eat More Fish Campaign’ launched today at Terah’s Fish Carnivore by Prof. J. M. Ntiba, PS State Department of Fisheries, through an Aquaculture Business Development Program (ABDP).
The Ksh. 15 billion program funded through State Department of Fisheries and International Fund for Agriculture ( IFAD) will be implemented in 15 Counties after successful piloting in the three Counties and an equal number in Western region.
The PS who was addressing fish farmers, said capture fish business has had maximal exploitation resulting into scramble for fish worldwide. He noted more concerted effort by fish stake holders is key in domesticating fish laws to create a single source of inputs and establish stable markets for aquaculture's sustainability.
Chief of Staff Gideon Kimathi who was accompanied by a number of CECs, affirmed Kiraitu’s support to the program. He said the government intends to introduce aquaculture to youth thtough MYS Youth in Agriculture, simulate fish farming, value chain addition and trading of fish products. He urged schools to consider introducing fish products as part of diet in order to promote fish economy.
He was echoed by Carol Mutiga, CEC in charge of Fisheries, who pointed out the County Government is at the forefront in ensuring farmers are capacitated to strike a nutrition and fish’s extra- economic balance.
Her collegues Water, Public Service and Cooperatives CECMs, Dr. Eunice Kobia,Kiutha Arithi and Maingi Mugambi respectively, who were also present promised maximal support to the program through their departments.
