PRESS RELEASE

REV. MONS. SILAS SILVIUS NJIRU

Bishop Emeritus of Meru-Kenya

A MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE BY H.E. KIRAITU MURUNGI, E.G.H GOVERNOR, MERU COUNTY

On behalf of the people of Meru County, my family and myself, I would like to express our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family, relatives, friends and the Catholic fraternity in general for the passing of Rev. Bishop Silas Njiru who succumbed to COVID-19 in Turin, Italy. He served as the Bishop of Meru from 1976 until he retired in 2004. He was the first African Bishop of Meru and the second Bishop of Meru since the creation of Meru Diocese on 2nd May 1953.

Bishop Njiru was a very close friend and confidant. I knew and interacted with most of his family members in Embu. He was a very wise man and a person of high integrity. During his tenure as Bishop of Meru, he provided exemplary leadership not only to the Catholics in Meru but to all the people of Meru County. He contributed greatly to the growth of the Catholic Church in Meru and Kenya.

He was truly a man of God who always spoke the truth, and he always reminded us that it is only the truth that shall set us free. As leaders of Meru, we shall miss his warmth, wisdom, love and fatherly counsel. We have not only lost a Bishop, but also a great leader of the people of Meru.

To the family of Bishop Njiru, and the Catholic Diocese of Meru, please accept our deepest sympathy and condolences.

May the Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace.

H.E. Kiraitu Murungi, E.G.H

Governor, Meru County
