The County Government of Meru unveils a 5-year Meru County Urban Water & Sanitation Services Corporation's (MEWASCO) Strategic Plan to aid in meeting the fastest growing need for improved water supply and sanitation services in the urban areas.
The 2021-2026 plan seeks to revitalize water services and sanitation infrastructure, institutional development, external linkages, ensure the corporation's financial sustainability, environmental conservation and provision of sustainably quality, affordable and adequate water for improved livelihoods.
Officiating the launch, Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu envisioned an end to perennial water poverty as promised by Governor Kiraitu Murungi in his campaign manifesto. He said the county has invested heavily in the water sector, by sinking 195 solar powered boreholes in arid areas benefiting at least 70,000 households, apart from supporting a number of major community water projects.
He was echoed by CEC Water, Dr. Eunice Kobia, who asserted water provision has been a key deliverable focusing on piped, rain and ground Waters across the county.
The Corporation's CEO, Joseph Mberia, stated the plan's implementation will ultimately double the current 80,000 M³ Meru town's supply through extension services. The event brought together various key water stakeholders in the Eastern region.
