Governor Bishop Kawira Mwangaza
H.E Bishop Kawira Mwangaza was elected Governor of Meru County in August 2022. She was born in 1973 and is married to Robert Murega Rimberia. She grew up with her mother after the passing on of her father when she was young. This unfortunate event forced her to do menial jobs in her neighborhood to assist her mother in catering to the daily needs of her younger siblings.
She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Kampala International University, a Bachelor's Degree in Arts in Transformational Leadership from Pan African University, a Certificate in Human Resources from Makerere University and a Certificate in County Governance from Meru University of Science & Technology. She completed her High School Education at Moyale Girls in Marsabit County, where she did her O-levels, and attended CCM Ontulili in Buuri Sub-County for her Primary Education.
Governor Kawira is an accomplished grassroots mobilizer and philanthropist. Through her personal social development initiatives, she started revolutionary programs like "Okolea Kaana Ka Miiru," meaning "Save the Meru Child." This program focuses on community empowerment through education and aims to uplift the welfare of marginalized groups, including people living with disabilities and the poor.
She unsuccessfully vied for the Buuri Constituency Parliamentary seat in 2013. However, this did not deter her passion and determination to transform the lives of her people. She was later elected in the 2017 general elections as the Woman Representative for Meru County. During her time in Parliament, she was a member of the powerful House Business Committee and the Departmental Committee for Communication, Innovation and Information.
In Parliament, she passed legislation that ensured Meru was well represented and held various Government Institutions accountable. She notably questioned the Cabinet Secretary for Education on the quality of construction in schools and Vocational Institutions to guarantee the safety of learners. She also held the Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection accountable for the employment list for people living with disabilities in Government Institutions. Additionally, she took to task Government Institutions focused on ensuring food security in the country.
Her story is a classic one-rising from grass to grace.
Before joining politics, she started small businesses such as cake baking, which later led to a successful hardware business. She subsequently opened several branches around Upper Eastern Kenya.
Governor Kawira also ventured into the communication and media business by opening the first Kimeru TV station, known as Baite TV. She is a born-again Christian and a Bishop at Baite Family Fellowship Church.
