Meru County Hosts Cabinet Secretary Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya In Strategic Coffee Sector Revival Mission.

Governor of Meru County, H.E. Hon. Rev. Mutuma M’Ethingia, had the honour of welcoming Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya, the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Cooperatives and Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development, to Meru County during his nationwide initiative to revive coffee production. The visit aimed to revitalize cooperative societies in both the traditional coffee-growing regions, where production has declined, and the emerging areas showing potential for coffee farming. As part of Kenya's coffee belt, the County Government of Meru remains fully committed to reviving coffee farming through targeted interventions. These include the distribution of quality seedlings, strengthening of cooperative societies and enhancing agricultural extension services. The Governor expressed sincere appreciation for the National Government’s support, which will significantly bolster the county’s ongoing efforts to improve productivity and uplift the livelihoods of Meru residents. Governor M’Ethingia underscored the importance of the National Government’s initiative to strengthen the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), noting that it plays a crucial role in promoting accountability and addressing mismanagement, cartel interference and misinformation within the coffee sector. With increased reports of theft and exploitation, the Governor emphasized the urgent need for enhanced security and farmer education. He affirmed the County Government’s commitment to working in collaboration with national agencies to ensure the success of these reforms, which are essential for creating jobs and transforming lives in the region.
