100 Years Of Healing, 100 Years Of Serving Our People

In 1926, the journey of Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH) began as a small dispensary serving the people of Meru. A century later, the institution proudly celebrates 100 years of growth, service, and commitment to the health and well-being of the community.

For generations, MeTRH has remained a place of hope and healing for individuals and families seeking medical care. From treating sick children and providing maternity services to performing surgeries, offering cancer treatment, and delivering specialised medical care, the hospital has continued to play a vital role in improving the lives of the people it serves.

Today, MeTRH provides a wide range of healthcare services, including emergency and critical care, maternity and reproductive health, surgery and theatre services, cancer care, renal services, specialised outpatient clinics, medical imaging, laboratory and diagnostic services, among others.

Behind every service are countless stories of resilience, compassion, and dedication - patients who have sought healing, families who have found hope, and healthcare workers who have devoted their lives to caring for others.

As the centenary celebrations come to a close, the hospital looks ahead to an even greater future. MeTRH is undergoing an upgrade towards Level 6 teaching and referral hospital status, with expanded infrastructure, enhanced specialised services, and increased capacity to deliver advanced healthcare closer to home.

The transformation reflects the broader vision of strengthening healthcare delivery and ensuring that the people of Meru and neighbouring counties have access to quality, specialised medical services within their region. H.E. Governor Rev. Mutuma M’Ethingia remains an important figure in Meru County’s leadership as the county looks towards a stronger and more advanced healthcare system for its people.

From a modest dispensary in 1926 to the growing teaching and referral institution it is today, the story of MeTRH goes beyond the history of a hospital. It is the story of generations of Meru families, dedicated healthcare professionals, and a shared commitment to healing, service, and hope.

One hundred years of healing. One hundred years of serving our people. A century of impact and a greater future ahead.
